Meat lovers should find a lot to like
about Ted's Montana Grill. The menu is already loaded
with carnivorous delights - burgers, pot-roast and meatloaf-
not to mention myriad cuts of steak. And your options
double because all of it is available in beef as well
as bison. Bison is the signature offering at Ted's Montana
Grill. A chain of saloons that somehow manages to be
upscale as well as family oriented. The latest location
has been garnering a buzz since opening a few weeks
ago in Carmel's Clay Terrace shopping area.
One thing Ted's prides itself on is freshness.
Salad dressing (one of our parties was pleased to find
Thousand Island), and sauces are made in Ted's kitchen.
The generously cut salt and pepper onion
rings lightly breaded and fried and served along side
a horseradish dipping sauce were great. Even a couple
of onion haters among us were won over by the rings
crispness, low grease factor and delicate flavor. Entrees
are a success all around. The Bison meatloaf proved
to be a perfect showcase for the slight sweetness and
firm texture of buffalo meat.
Beer-can chicken, a recent menu addition,
turned out to be free-range chicken wonderfully infused
with rosemary garlic and beer, then roasted to a fine
turn. Our server cheerfully agreed to substitute fries,
which turned out to be unusually good, for the broccoli
which was paired with the chicken by more health-minded
types. A dollop of garlic mashed potatoes rounded out
the plate. A lengthy list of burgers extends the menu
further and all can be prepared with veggie patties,
too.
For vegetarians dining at Ted's Montana
Grill, the Vermejo veggie burger topped with Monterey
Jack, mushrooms and sautéed onions was a treat
boasting fresh ingredients on a better than usual bun.
Ted's dessert menu is surprisingly simple,
comprising mostly of ice cream, cookies and root beer
floats. Our meal came to a satisfying finish with an
oversized chocolate chip cookie with chocolate and vanilla
ice cream and a special that night, apple cobbler.
The restaurant prides itself on its eco-friendliness.
It doesn't have any plastic utensils, menus are printed
on recycled paper and the drinks are served in recyclable
bottles. Like the song about the home where the buffalo
roam, Ted's Montana Grill is all about the wide-open
spaces brand of America.
